David Keith got into acting to meet girls. Or so he claims.
Keith explains that he never got involved in the emotional side of his career, meaning he didn’t buy into the Hollywood hype that derails so many young actors. Nor does acting define his identity. “I got paid to have fun,” he says with his trademark crooked grin. So when Brian Salesky, executive director of Knoxville Opera, made Keith “an offer he couldn’t refuse,” he agreed to tackle a very different kind of role – that of the Pirate King in Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, coming to the Tennessee Theatre March 12 – 14.
On Tuesday, December 1st from 6 – 9 p.m. in the Square Room at Café 4 — that would be tomorrow — the Social Media Club Knoxville will hold their Winter Panel which is titled “Social Media Liability, Ethics & Policy”. In layman terms: how not to get sued for using social media. Hey, it happens. If you’re interested please RSVP here.

On the spur of the moment, I decided to attend the Veterans Day program at the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery this year. Although I drive by the solemn rows of tombstones every day, I’d never ventured up the hill to the octagonal structure at the top. This year, in the wake of the Fort Hood massacre, I felt moved to do so. I wanted to honor our veterans in a personal way. My dad, a Korean War veteran, went with me to the service hosted by the Tennessee Chapter of the State Guard Association of the United States. Neither of us knew what to expect.

WDVX’s monthly live broadcast, Tennessee Shines, is now established as the go-to venue for great, sometimes eclectic, music. The latest installment was a concert with no real singular highlights, just performance after performance that proved to be continually luminescent, with every musician at the top of their game.

I would like to ramble…no actually I think gush would be the appropriate word. Yup, Gush, I would like to gush for a moment about a certain Knoxville event that is near and dear to my heart. The Knoxville Brewers Jam. Just let those words roll off the tip of your tongue, “Knoxville Brewers Jam”. Ahhh yes, the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up.
“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” — The Postman’s Creed, 1912
Apparently, beer drinkers have a code, too: “Neither rain nor gloom of cloud coverage nor cold nor mud nor coinciding UT football game stays these beer drinkers from the swift consumption of the over-abundance of beer.”
Saturday night, October 17 is a date that will go down in history – albeit, quirky cultural history, but history nonetheless. This chilly evening marked Knoxville’s inaugural Snug Pub Crawl, hailed by one local tweeter as the “tweet-up of the century.” Twenty-some-odd Snuggie-clad seekers gathered at the appointed time on Market Square for a group picture. Head Snuggite, Saul Young, served as photojournalist for the event that drew participants from as far away as Chattanooga.
