Saturday night, October 17 is a date that will go down in history – albeit, quirky cultural history, but history nonetheless. This chilly evening marked Knoxville’s inaugural Snug Pub Crawl, hailed by one local tweeter as the “tweet-up of the century.” Twenty-some-odd Snuggie-clad seekers gathered at the appointed time on Market Square for a group picture. Head Snuggite, Saul Young, served as photojournalist for the event that drew participants from as far away as Chattanooga.

Contrary to popular belief, social media isn’t the end of civilization as we know it. Facebook didn’t put a stop to interpersonal communication. LinkedIn doesn’t negatively impact the vital, vibrant pulse of the business community. Twitter hasn’t replaced the kitchen table or the corner bar for meaningful human interaction. Rather, these social networking platforms and others have heightened connectivity worldwide and right here in our own backyard.
Some folks might consider Knoxville an improbable hub of frenetic digital activity. I beg to differ.

If you live in Knoxville or plan to visit the area on Thursday, September 10, I encourage you all to check out Knoxville Twestival!
Knoxville Twestival is part of a charitable event taking place in communities all around the world. Twestival uses the power of the local Twitterverse to encourage community members to come out in person to a fun event to be held at the Knoxville Zoo on September 10, 2009 from 7-10pm, and to donate money to a designated local charity: The Salvation Army of Knoxville.

Last Wednesday we told you we had more social media in store. Read below for more on another Knoxville media club.
On May 15th, the Social Media Club of Knoxville announced that their inaugural networking mixer will take place on Wednesday, June 3 from 6-8pm on the patio at Barley’s Taproom in the Old City.

If social media is your thing then you’re going to have lots of brain-stimulating events to choose from in the near future — more on that in a future post. If our very own neighborhood czar, Suzy Trotta, makes you shaky in the real estate knees, then we have THE event for you.

Back on April 17 we asked which Knoxvillians you would most want to see on Twitter. I wanted to see all of Knoxville’s local businesses on Twitter, but realized I only knew of a handful. So I created a Google Form and put it out into the Twitter stream.
The Knoxville Social Media Association, or KSMA as we’re coining it, has launched a sparkly new website that’s powered by Ning. It looks like there’s a lot going on already so join the conversation if social media is your vice. Just like you can follow Knoxify on Twitter, KSMA also blasts tweets from time to time.
Scott Maentz dropped us a line about an upcoming breakfast for geek’s. The first Knoxville Geek Breakfast is slated for Thursday January 8 from 7:30am — 8:30am at the IHOP on Lovell Rd. It’s good to see this kind of thing popping up in Knoxville.

After multiple “tweets” by Whodini, a large group of Knoxville’s Twitter community met for lunch at Lakeside Tavern. Here’s a quick round-up of the coverage.
Update: The official roster from the tweet-up. If I missed someone leave a comment.
