How Should Knoxville’s Civic Leaders Spend Federal Stimulus Dollars?

CP KFQ, Questions 3 Comments

Mid-February we reported on the 35+ “shovel-ready” Knoxville projects that are seeking a piece of the stimulus pie. Now that money is beginning to flow from Uncle Sam it has to go somewhere.

How would you like the civic leaders of Knoxville to spend federal stimulus money?

This week there’s an excellent addition to our question: Stimulate Local. Our friends over at Chattarati have developed an online tool to help “average citizens petition their civic leaders to spend federal stimulus dollars with local vendors and to transparently share information about how those funds are spent.” Start a petition why dontcha?

  1. OK this is supposed to be economic stimulus. How do any of the top 5 (of the 35) stimulate the economy? How about bolstering CDFIs in the MSA? How about a program based on the community block grants to encourage new SMALL businesses and bolster struggling SMALL businesses?

    @Valerie: All great points Valerie.

    I noticed on the site, StimulusWatch.org, that these projects are getting the most positive votes:

    1. FIRST CREEK DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS
    2. TRANSFER STATION WATER QUALITY UNIT
    3. CROSS PARK DRIVE DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS
    4. RESURFACING CITYWIDE
    5. WESTLAND DRIVE BRIDGE REPLACEMENT

    Take in mind these are “projects”. I wonder how much money we’ll get for small businesses? I can’t imagine those same funds are lumped in with “project” money.
