The neighborhood is roughly bounded by Central Street and Woodland Avenue to the west of Broadway, and Cecil Avenue, Sixth Avenue, and Glenwood Avenue to the east of Broadway. Old North Knoxville is very convenient to St. Mary’s, Downtown and UT and is easily accessible via I-40, I-275, and Broadway.

Old North Knoxville Information

Old North Knoxville is one of Knoxville’s oldest historic communities, dating back to the 1880s. Like 4th & Gill and Island Home, it was originally one of Knoxville’s streetcar suburbs. The neighborhood was made a historic district in 1922 and restoration and renovations have been ongoing since that time. Old North Knoxville, Inc. and Knox Heritage have both worked to save homes in the district which would otherwise have been demolished.

The area is an architecture lover’s heaven. Built over the course of several decades, it features several late 19th century and early 20th century home styles, including Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, Craftsman, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Neoclassical, and French Eclectic.

With sidewalks on almost every street, Old North Knoxville is also a great place for people looking for a walkable lifestyle. The area is also adjacent to the new “Downtown North” corridor and is within walking distance of the new restaurants, shops, and other businesses that are currently springing up there.

Hungry Old North Knoxers can choose to hoof over to Downtown North to enjoy some delectable sweets at Magpies or something a little healthier at The Glowing Bowl cafe (part of The Glowing Body yoga studio). Other eateries within walking distance include the funky Time Warp Tea Room and the time tested and tasty Freezo, both on Central Ave. Residents can also drive, bike or walk the short distance to Knoxville’s Old City, where they can get a hot cup of coffee at Old City Java or a frosty cold pint at The Crown and Goose.

Old North Knoxville is currently zoned for Christenberry Elementary School, Whittle Springs Middle School and Fulton High School.

You will totally dig Old North Knoxville if you’re looking for:

  • a home with character or a historic home
  • something close to Downtown or UT campus
  • a close knit community
  • something very close to a high school
  • a very walkable neighborhood

You’ll want to skip Old North Knoxville if you’re looking for:

  • a new or newer neighborhood
  • easy access to mall shopping
  • something in a suburban setting
  • a low traffic neighborhood
  • something off the beaten path

I live in the razor thin margin between 4th & Gill and Old North (aka Glenwood Ave). I totally agree with everything you said here. I love it here and love selling homes in this area.

Thanks, Rob! I know that little strip of land that you call home — we need to come up with a name for it that makes it sound COOLER than Old NoKno and 4th & Gill.

I’ve lived in this neighborhood for almost 13 years, renting for the first 7 years and 6 years in our house. I’d love to have a bigger yard to grow more tomatoes but it would be a very sad day if we ever moved. Love the people here, love the houses, love the atmosphere. Close to everything downtown but still feels like a neighborhood. And the neighbors — that’s what makes this place so wonderful!

What the Residents Say

  • "We get together and dine at each others' homes. We talk porch-to-porch and watch out for each other. I also love that I can see the Sunsphere from the house, I can walk to the Old City and I have a movie theatre within blocks! All this, plus, being a history nut, I live in a place alive with the stories of Knoxville's 200 years." - Rob Howard
