Guide to Westmoreland

Where is Westmoreland?

Just off of Westland Drive west of Northshore in close-in West Knoxville. The neighborhood actually consists of two main areas: Old Westmoreland and New Westmoreland. Old Westmoreland is north of the eastern end of Westland and New Westmoreland is south of Westland. In other words, if you turn from Northshore on to Westland and turn right by the water wheel, you’re in Old Westmoreland. Turn left and you’re probably in New Westmoreland.

Westmoreland is easily accessible via I-40, I-140, Kingston Pike, and Northshore Drive.

Westmoreland Information

Westmoreland is a gentrified neighborhood located just minutes from Cherokee Country Club. It also happens to be the place that Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam calls home.

As its name implies, the Old Westmoreland section contains the oldest, and arguably some of the grandest, homes in the neighborhood. Though there are some newer homes and some new construction in Old Westmoreland, the majority of the homes were built from about the 1920s to the 1980s. The homes in New Westmoreland, are, you guessed it, newer, with most being between 15 – 20 years old.

Whether they’re new or old, homes in Westmoreland are large, with an average square footage of just above 4000. Most of the homes are traditional two story affairs, but there are also some cottage style and Mediterranean influenced homes sprinkled throughout the older section. Lots tend to be pretty big and there are lots of mature trees everywhere.

Westmoreland is in a great central location for shopping. Residents can head up Westland to do some mall shopping at West Town Mall or they can go up Lyon’s View Pike to shop at the many boutiques located in the District at Bearden. If they just need to do some grocery shopping or stop by the hardware store, Westmorelanders can drive a little ways south down Northshore to the Rocky Hill area, where there are several small, locally owned shops.

Residents of Westmoreland also don’t have to go far for recreation. The neighborhood is just a stone’s throw away from Lake Shore Park, one of West Knoxville’s favorite walking/jogging spots.

Hungry Westmoreland residents can go to Rocky Hill for some great traditional American fare at Sullivan’s or some killer wings at Rooster’s Bar.

Westmoreland is currently zoned for Bearden Elementary School, Rocky Hill Elementary School, Bearden Middle School, and West High School.

You will totally dig Westmoreland if you’re looking for:

  • a large home in an upscale community
  • something close to a country club and golf course
  • close proximity to both mall and boutique shopping
  • easy access to a public park
  • a neighborhood with large lots and lots of mature trees

You’ll want to skip Westmoreland if you’re looking for:

  • something under $250,000
  • a smaller home
  • something off the beaten path
  • a walkable neighborhood/area
