One of my biggest concerns in moving to Fountain City was that I would be without a local bike shop. That fear was quickly snuffed after visiting Fountain City Pedaler, located at 4620 Old Broadway, just off the 640 exit.
Fountain City Pedaler is small, but well laid out with plenty of parking for group-ride meet ups. They carry Marin, Diamond Back in addition to a couple boutique brands. (I saw a delicious BMC frame hanging on one wall.) They also carry Shimano wheels and components as well as clothing from Sugoi among many other accessories.
Owner Luke Grieve opened Fountain City Pedaler five months ago after working 10 years in other bike shops in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Ala. and a bicycle manufacturing company outside Cleveland, Tenn. He said he saw an opportunity for a friendly, knowledgeable bike shop for Fountain City and North Knoxville.
Also, Grieve and his wife are local to Fountain City, which is a big plus in my book.
Grieve says his focus is on providing quick, quality service at competitive rates. And they will work on any bike, regardless of the brand, or whether it’s old or new.
Some of their common service costs are:
- Tune-up: $50 (entire bike)
- Flat repair: $5 (tube), $6 (labor)
Fountain City Pedaler also hosts group rides:
- Wednesdays: Mountain bike ride held at area trails
- Thursdays: Road ride that leaves at 5 or 6 pm (depending on the time of year) for a 20 to 25 mile loop
The shop is also involved with building local mountain bike trails with the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club (AMBC), and helps with various cycling advocacy groups in Knoxville. This year , they will be a sponsor for the Knox Revolution womens’ club/team with a goal to get more women into cycling.
If you’re a Fountain City or North Knoxille resident, and are shopping for a new bike or just looking for a quick tune-up, check out Fountain City Pedaler.
