County Commission Interview: Evelyn Gill

Our quest to learn more about the County Commission candidates continues on with Evelyn Gill. She is running for County Commissioner in District 1 Seat A.

1. Introduce yourself to Knoxville, who are you, and why are you running?

My name is Evelyn Gill, I am running for County commissioner, District 1 Seat A
The upcoming elections presents an extraordinary opportunity for the citizens of Knox County VOTE for CHANGE and NEW LEADERSHIP.
I want to be the representive for this District. My qualifications include 13+ years of civic and community experience. I have a Masters in Public Administration from Rutgers University and a Bachelors in Political Science from Tougaloo College. I am currently in my fourth year as a Special Education Teacher with Knox County Schools.

I am running for this position because ALL constituents in District 1 Seat A deserves to have a qualified and professional representative who will act on their behalf. I envision the Commissioner’s role as one who is accessible, responsive and a good listener.

My platform include:
1.) Sustainable Economic Revitalization
Developing a comprehensive economic plan that captures the unique fabric of each individual community so each community potential can be reached. (Areas include: housing, business development, training, education and environmental issues).

2.) Stronger Public Schools
Retaining qualified teachers by offering competitive salaries and affordable health insurance options. Also making sure resources are allocated to address both the rigors of academic success as well as employable skills for the workforce.

3.) Cleaner, Safer Neighborhoods
More equitable distribution of resources that would address these issues:
Crime, Litter, overgrow lots and vacant building to name a few…
Addressing these issues are a start all of which will enhance overall community VALUE and PRIDE

4.) Accessible & Responsible Government
Act Professionally
Be willing to listen to ALL constituents of the District 1 Seat A
Act fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars
Be open and accessible to all citizens

2. We think it’s better knowing what not to do rather than having an extensive plan. What areas or interests would benefit Knox County not to venture into?

As Commissioner:
I will not engage in behavior that is unprofessional and unethical..

I will not act as if I had all the answers…

I will not act as if I can do this job without the assistance of my constituents…

3. What 5 things could you not live without?

I cannot live without the following:

1.) My husband, Michael
2.) My circle of family and friends
3.) 100% Colombian Coffee
4.) My Garden
5.) Vintage Clothes
